There are several ways for a trained individual to tell if the layman is lying. The book I listed below is in my personal collection, and I won't go without it. I obviously don't have years of military training to back up the skills I've learned, but even the general knowledge has come in really handy! Check it out!

Where there is smoke there is fire. In other words, if someone is sketchy, there's a reason. It may not be noticeable at first, but people often get tangled in a web of their own lies. They often start to unravel and the lies start to eat them up inside. You can just tell, follow your gut instinct it is often right. Your intution is one of your most powerful tools to detect when someone is lying. All the military experience to know when someone lying, is building up someone's intution and making them more aware and less naive. So just follow your gut. Even if you guess it wrong the first time, there is a lie underneath, it may not be a pink elephant and standing out like a sore thumb...but if a person is acting out or their norm or shady, it may not be for the most dark reasons, but there is a reason. Sometimes people just cover up what they feel they must compensate for.

i wouldn't try using those tactics as they may back fire on you, cause people are smart enough to know when they're being drilled for information, like cheating , lying or doing something they know might get them in trouble, the approach i take is to get some facts first, know the answers before you ask questions, but, be subtle, cool act like it's business as usual w/ your man. don't do anything out of the ordinary or act different as this might spook him and cause him to clam up.many times people will be caught red handed lying . here's the secret i'm tryin to let you in on: the first lie is easy , the second o.k. maybe , it's the third , the fourth, the fifth lie , etc, etc, that they get caught.because they always have to remember what they told you before, and eventually they will slip, then they're screwed. the truth doesn't require any memory.it comes naturaly. no work invvolved !!

There is some truth to this belief...I have my Master's in social work which is psych. influenced and my LCSW which is a licensed clinical social worker (aka, private practice). People do subconsciously shift their eyes to the left when they are lying based on the theory that the left side of the brain (creative) is more active during this process due to the reliance on a creative and false response. This theory does not hold true for every individual especially those who could be defined as compulsive liars...also knowing your partner and listening to your own intuitions (sensing when behavior is unusual or abnormal) can be a good indicator. ex. fidgety behavior or avoidance

I saw a documentary on it. They said most techniques are bogus and are no better than pure chance. However, often liars make up elaborate stories to make it believable, while others will simply say "I had a flat tire" and leave it at that. Gestures often betray a liar, according to the documentary I saw, the best way to tell a liar is that their gestures are the opposite of their words. On insisting the didn't steal something they might nod on insistence. Or say that's right and shake their head.
