cooling ok, if use long time. fan works after compressor tipped off. Everything works right other than this gas smell.

Question is confusing. Are we talking home unit?
When you say tripped off, did it blow a breaker or just simply shut off?
You may have have a freon leak, but if you did it won't be cooling for long. The other thing could be mold on the heat exchanger and that is what you are smelling.
The best thing may be to have it serviced by a professional.
