The IT people have come to my PC and changed something with Outlook. This was unrequested 'help' and now they won't be back in my neck of the woods for another week.

Now I have 2 calendars in Outlook (Calendar and Calendar in Personal Folders). I'd be happy to use just the Personal Folders Outlook because it has all my dates in there, but it will not show any alerts when dates come up.

how can I fix this?

You fix this by importing the Calendar from the Personal Folders into your regular calendar (File > Import/Export). If you do not do this not only will you not get alerts but others cannot see appointments that are on a Calendar in a Personal Folders so it will be hard for them to schedule meeting with you.
