If you haven't seen The Shining, then pull your finger out and watch it as soon as possible! It is the movie that set the precedent for thriller / horrors! There are 2 versions, Jack Nicholson (standard length) and a new double disc which was REALLY well done and had more similarities to the original book.
Anything by Stephen King, you can pretty much guarantee a good night in.

"Fear Of The Dark"(2002)...good plot and totally scary! I thought it would be lame as it was in the 2 for $1 rentals section, but it was surprisingly scary for a lower budget film, not only up to the end, but even now, close my closet door before going to bed!
