My vote would go to Guy Pierce, star of the film "The Proposition" (2006):

Corestar...The fact that Guy Pearce doesn't have much 'face recognition' is a plus for him to play Roland of Gilead. He's got a strong yet mysterious and brooding quality to him.

In my opinion, Hugh Jackman and Bruce Willis are not worthy enough to play The Gunslinger.

But agree to Christian Bale, and he's actually my second choice.

I wholeheartedly disagree with Kiefer Sutherland! No way he's gonna turn Roland of Gilead into 'Jack Bauer'.

Well, I like Guy Pearce but I don't think he has enough face recognition to play Roland. Plus he isn't old enough. You need someone who looks old enough to pull off Roland's aches and pains (particularly in the last book) believably.

I'd go with someone like:

Hugh Jackman or maybe Christian Bale

I'd also suggest Bruce Willis but I don't know if he could really pull off Roland or not

Matt Damon could almost do it...if he wasn't Matt Damon.

Bruce willis COULD have done it (see Last Man Standing) but not now by a long shot

Bale is definately a good choice, but I think he's just a tad too pretty or slick looking

Scoff as I think you might, I think Ryan Reynolds could pull it off (think psycho Ryan reynolds at the end of Ammityville)

And I think Cleve Owen could do it as well

I picture Clive Owen everytime I read them.
Also, Gerard Butler (of 300) has been getting a lot of publicity lately for getting cast in the remake of "Escape From New York." He might have the "leading man" clout now.

Hugh Jackman would be perfect, he's tall, and he looks a lot like a young Clint Eastwood, plus he's a great actor.

Kiefer Sutherland. He's proved he can play rough around the edges roles and I think Johnny Depp would be amazing as Eddie.
