When we are being made to insulate our houses and check for damaged window frames etc,why then do we go and put a brick in the wall with holes in it,why not just have draughty windows.

the top of the house keeps the heat in, the air bricks help stop condensation by allowing air flow.

If the air bricks were massive then the building wouldn't save heat, the wind would blow it all away. The airbricks allow a circulation of air that gets rid of condensation under the thermal protection of the roof and walls.
Overall you are right it could be more efficient but your house would be covered in dew every morning but the house works as a system and this is a compromise of desires over practicalities.

You need to have the air circulating they help with condensation and probably gas fumes. You would lose much more heat through draughty windows. I have one in my living room that is a right pain when it's windy and I block it off I shouldn't but it's too cold if I don't, it's behind the radiator so I shove a towel behind it.

Air bricks are for 2 reasons. They circulate air under the floor boards to stop them rotting, and if you have a gas fire you need air to keep the burner clear of carbon monoxide ( a free flow of air)

you need air bricks to allow air to circulate, otherwise you would find a lot of damp and mould starting to build up inside the house.

They ventilate the underfloor space and stop dryrot, also they provide an airflow in the living accomodation so any gas fires or gas heaters don't kill us with carbon monoxides.
