Adding a "y" to an end of a name adds a personal touch, a sense of ownership, suggests that there is affection toward the animal, in this case but could have the same meaning for people. Dragon-wanna-be is just weird, and who is actually going to address their pet as "dragon wanna-be", it doesn't have correct context.
