If the mouse movement is jerky, you need to take the ball out the bottom (by rotating the retaining ring) and clean the two rollers that you see. Even a small amount of dirt or fluff will make the mouse erratic.

When you say it's not working properly, what do you mean? Is it moving, but not acting right most of the time?, cause it could just be dirty. If you take out the ball, you will see 3 little wheels inside, and normally a thick grey fuzzy stripe in the middle. This is dust, dirt, oil, and debris. You can easily remove it with your fingernails, or blow it with a can duster. You'd be amazed how much better it will work.

Take the ball cover off and clean the inside where the ball is. They are bad at collecting oils and dirt from hands. You should clean it once a week if you use the computer daily. DO NOT USE WATER. Use a swab and just clean it with that.

Have you taken the ball out from underneath and cleaned the inside? The "ball" ones usually collect a lot of gunk, and this can cause it to not work properly.

back side of mouse just open the slot where ball sits
and just clean the ball and slot
then it should work fine.
go to control panel click on mouse
and increase/decrease speed/click/double click etc.

if none of the above work, just throw the mouse outside your window and buy a new one

As the other posters have said, you need to clean the ball. I'd add use a q-tip and rubbing alcohol to clean it. The alcohol will clean it but will evaporate, so there's no risk of damage from the liquid.
