To build suspense and also because in space there is absolute silence and on Earth there is no way to create absolute silence.

Well, as far as I know, we havn't been able to devolop space travel capable of exceeding the speed of light, so does THAT make the movies less enjoyable?

I mean, boy! how fun would starwars be if the Death Star was actuall the International SPace station and the millenium falcon was only a space shuttle!!!

for crying out loud, its called creative license, movies defy the laws of physics all the time, because most people go to movies to be entertained and to escape reality in some way.

i believe this answers your question. this is an excerpt of an article from www.space.com

http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/mystery_monday_030922.html

"Sound can travel through space, because space is not the total vacuum it's often made out to be. Atoms of gas give the universe a ubiquitous atmosphere of sorts, albeit a very thin one.

Sound, unlike light, travels by compressing a medium. On Earth, the atmosphere works well as a sound-carrying medium, as does water. The planet itself is very adept at transmitting an earthquake's seismic waves, a form of sound.

Space, though not as efficient, can also serve as a medium"

Just imagine how BORING star wars would be if two ships engaged and one was moved off course slightly by the others impact. We love to see explosions, even in space. It is purely entertainment.

To enhance your viewing experience. Without the background sounds, it's very blah.
