It's used to compact a file or directory into a smaller, yet almost useless, file. You usually zip files in order to store them longterm, put them on space-restricted portable media like floppies or CD-ROMs, or upload them to the internet (to preserve the file architecture and completeness).
However, beginning with Windows XP, Windows has its own native zipper/unzipper built in, so WinZip is not used nearly as much. Also, portable media have begun to have much larger storage capacities, so zipping is much less common today than in years past.

WinZip is a compression/decompression utility used to create archives and reduce file sizes. Zip archives can be recognised by a .zip extension.
Zip Archives reduce total file size, saving disk space and transfer times across the Internet.

winzip is used to zip files. i.e. you have 100 files size is 100 mb then winzip will compress this to one file and size will be just 10 mb.
then u can use winzip to unzip this one file and get 100 files
