The effects were numerous: social, economic, etc.
Socially speaking it started mutating the classes of population. The bourgeois became extremely wealthy and wanted to overtake the aristocracy. The effect was the French Revolution and other revolutions like the ones in 1848. At about the same time a new class of city dwellers was founded: the industrial workers. They became pour as opposed to the bourgeois and they were not considered a threat because they were not organized in any type of unions. The aristocracy suffered the most because they didn't have the economical strength to explain their unfounded political power. They will fall during the modern revolutions.
Economically a series of events started: countries like Great Britain, France, Prussia, The U.S. and later even Japan became extremely interested in trade, industrialization and became powerful nations. Factories were developed (the first one a silk factory in G.B. - 1717) so that workers can be more organized and production increased. The home work shops of the Middle Ages were obsolete. There was also a flow of citizens from the rural part of countries to the urban area which, curiously, did not give birth to new cities, it increased the population of existing cities and transformed them into large industrialized metropolises like Paris or London. The Industrial Revolution also developed agriculture especially in Britain.
In Asian countries the Industrial Revolution occurred slowly. Those countries (Japan, China) imposed isolation from the western world. In japan during the Meiji era (1868-1912) The Industrial Revolution happened in 30 years! The result: Japan was at the end of the XIX- th century the 5-th most powerful country in the world.

There are plenty.

Work became an issue, people started to work in factories, instead of thier homes and crop fields to earn a living. This meant that men and whole families had to move to places where there was work. This broke up the traditional extended family to a nuclear family, as the extended family was not needed. The Industrial revolution made way for cheaper products, which was accessable to the poorer people, so protecting the workplace was crucial, this lead to legislations and regulations introducted; health and safety etc.

There are more, i'll allow others to contribute.
