Back in the day, driveways were quite long, and more importantly you didn't park on them. The car got driven up to the door, the people got out, and the car was parked in the garage.
Also back in the day, parkways were meant to give people a place to drive for their Sunday drive. However, since the point of the Sunday drive was to just drive around, a lot of people didn't really have a set destination. So when the driver got tired, he pulled over and parked right on the side of the parkway to rest, or have lunch, or just enjoy the scenery.
Now a days, driveways are shorter, and people have places to be, so the actions on driveways and parkways have changed, but the names have not.
