Savvy's answer was very good i just want to add that health stores sell fenugreek seed in capsule form, and they helped me with my milk production. Also, I was fortunate enough to live near a lactation center where they rented out hospital grade pumps, which really helped. I double pumped for 15 minutes every hour and a half. My milk production went way up. Also remember that your body reacts to supply and demand, the less you nurse the less milk you will produce. I used to wake up a couple times at night to pump.

First of all, how do you know you aren't producing enough milk? Is the baby gaining weight properly? They really don't require much. If the baby is fussy during feedings, but gaining weight, it may be gas. Make sure that you burp the baby frequently. Let the baby nurse for as long as he or she wants. Don't go by a schedule. Pump after, but not before. The first milk of the feeding is thicker, the baby needs it. Consult with the la leche league on line or by phone. Good luck and congratulations.

Try to express some milk in between feedings. After a while, you will start to produce more milk. I did this and it worked well. Until I was producing enough, I just supplemented the baby with an ounce or two of formula after I breastfed, per my doctor.

Contact a lactation consultant and/or your local la leche league. You can also try an herb called fenugreek but i'd recommend talking to your babys doc first.Fenugreek worked for me and was recommended by our pediatrician and my lactation consultant. Some women say barley helps increase their milk supply too. Also be sure to keep nursing and stay hydrated.

Try adding leaves of horseradish tree/moringa/malunggay in your daily diet. It is best cooked with soup and vegetables. In local Filipino diet, it has become part of the daily supplement of nursing moms.

There is also a commercially available malunggay tablet in the market today, but fresh leaves are still the best. Also, always drink lots of CLEAR fluids - water, broths and the likes.

The best way is to keep breastfeeding and don't give the baby anything else. Your milk will increase by demand. Please contact www.lalecheleague.com for further support. If this is a small baby, you need to contact them in a hurry. You can increase your milk supply easily but your baby must have nutrition...

As you know your body only makes what it needs. If you want to produce more then you can express in between feeds to help build up your milk supply.

I was told to drink plenty of water. You may need to consider putting your baby onto the bottle. I had the same problem and it ended up with my baby and I in tears at feed time, so I had no choice but to bottle feed her.
