whatever mileage is on the new engine will be on the car, but the odometer will still read the previous mileage.
There is no way to reset it.

It's illegal (felony) to tamper with the odometer (mileage) of any car in the US. The odometer registers the miles driven based on either a computer reading of information provided by the transmission (most modern cars) or by a set of gears located at the transmission. If you change out the engine of a car, it will have no effect on the official mileage of the car. If you change out the transmission, it will also not affect the mileage, because the odometer is a self contained unit, that is designed to be tamperproof, so underhanded car dealers and private sellers can't 'reset' or lower the mileage shown on the odometer. Older cars can have their odometers cracked open and rolled back by hand, but again, this is VERY illegal, and if you're caught trying to sell a vehicle with an odometer discrepancy, it means jail time.
When someone replaces an engine, the car still has the same mileage, but the selling point becomes that there are only so many miles on the rebuilt engine.
My advice, there's no legal way to reduce a car's mileage, and the consequences for trying to do it illegally are so great, it's not worth it.

I am not sure BUT I know it is possible. I changed the transmission in my because the previous one stop working. The mileage was 25000 at the time.
I did not tamper with the mileage but I discovered hidden in my car was a maintenance book with a different set of miles. It went up to 70000 miles and it even had the vehicle's chaises number.
(This happens in Trinidad)
Hence It is possible to change the miles, but I am not sure how.
It is a 2008 Fielder wagon.

the old analog odometers could be turned back by hand. Some cars the store for miles is in a computer seperate from the guage pod. But most cars have the counter in the guage pod, so you could always buy a new guage pod with lower miles : )
Also remeber that if there are any services on record at the dealer YOU WILL GET CAUGHT

it's actually illegal to modify the mileage on a car if you intend on lowering the odometer in order to sell the car. Short of changing the cluster out, I don't think you can do much.
Changing the engine does nothing to what is shown on the odometer.

no. the only way to lower milage is to get a different speedometer with lower mileage on it. then you also have to state that if you sell the vehicle.
