Some cultures depict them as monstrous (especially mermen), the Japanese say if you eat a mermaid's flesh you will be immortal, Europeans say they grant wishes (meaning they must have magical abilities), Greek mythology depicts them as Sirens who will sing and entice men...then kill them. Many cultures have believed they have the most beautiful voices and are very vain.
As for any of these being superpowers, hmm...

Mermaids don't really have any superpowers, so to speak, but they were known in the old tales as spirits or enchanted beings whose songs drove sailors mad with desire, causing them to leap from their ships and drown. Farther back, some told tales of mermaid-like creatures, both men and women, who would help guide ships safely to shore. But I've never met one who could fly or shoot lasers from their eyes. At least not yet. ;)

They lure all men, mostly sailors, into going to the bottom of the ocean with them, they´re hypnotic gorgeous topless girls... They have the power of the "Holy Pu**y" all women actually do, man are hopeless against it.

There known to make sailors fall in love with them,then they drown them sometimes, they can be real bitches.But can sing like angels.
they say manatees inspired the legend but there real,
