Its most definitely and without a doubt Carlos Beltran. Howard is great, but he has only done it for 2 yrs while Beltran has been at it for a long time. Also ppl tend to forget that baseball is not just only about batting, fielding is just as important and Beltran is arguably the best outfielder in the game (notice i said ARGUABLY but he's def. a top 5 OF). Howard is a pretty good 1st baseman but as an all around player Beltran is much better. He also has great speed and a hell of an arm.

Beltran plays the harder position (CF) and plays it better than Howard plays his, easier, position (1b). Beltran will steal more bases. Howard is a better power hitter by far.

I say, the tie breaker is hitting for average. Unfortunately (Mets fan here), Beltran has not hit for great average over the past couple of years (Okay, I've officially wiped 2005 from my memory, so he didn't have a spectacular average LAST year). Howard did.

Of course, this is evaluating LAST year's preformance. As for what happens NEXT year, I think Beltran may bring his average up to the .300 range, and Howard may bring his down to around .290, making it extremely close.

In other words, they are too different to compare well. Lets just leave it as any team in baseball would be glad to have either one.

You cant compare them. Beltran is a better center fielder, Howard is a better first baseman. Beltran is a better all around, 5-tool player who can hit for power, field and steal bases. Howard is a better dead power hitter.

Anyone who just says "Howard is better" or "Beltran is better" doesnt understand baseball. It's like saying Derek Jeter is better than Babe Ruth. You cant compare players who are different types.

Besides, let Howard get a few years under his belt before you compare him to a proven veteran.

Until Howard throws up numbers for more than one season I have to say Beltran. ALTHOUGH I think Howard has more upside for the future.

I can tell by your question that you know its Beltran. five tool player. a proved quantity. let Howard do it again before you can evaluate. More general managers.would pick Beltran he's more valuable.
