Many people have difficulties with this concept. The expansion of the universe really just says that the space between hings in the universe is expanding. It is a local effect, not at all like an explosion. (the term 'Big Bang' only makes this confusion greater).
In essence, the best answer to your question is that the universe is expanding 'into the future'.

Very interesting question! but I am sorry to tell you that even scientists don't know what actually they are saying. Astronomy itself is a mystery so nobody can say or prove accurately a fact regarding it. So they give their opinions about it.
If you ask me, it is expanding because the planets, stars, galaxies and everything that exists in space are moving away from each other. To know what it is expanding into we need to know what is outside the universe which I think will not come to be known soon.

it is just expanding..and distance between the stars, galaxies are widenned...
scientist say because of big bang theory, the universe is expanding more and more...before the big bang, it was really small and concentrated...they say that because the energy released in big bang was so much that the universe started to expand..
they also said the galaxy andromeda was very near to our milky way glalaxy...but the distance between these galaxies are getting more and more...as the universe is expanding...
another new theory is developed now..Brainstorm theory..Well..I dont remember much of it..

Its expanding into more disorder
as the thermodynamic law (not sure of the number) goes
the entropy of the universe is always increasing
ie the disorder is increasing
so the universe is expanding into more and more disorder
a subspace f the univese is the earth and hey we all know the disorder here is increasing multifold

the best way i can think of to visualise
is of thing of any explosion
lets say a bomb
as it explodes the heat flows all over UN evenly what it expands in to
well same thing with universe a tiny nugget explode and the things in that nugget are expanding
eventually things will get so much apart that even protons and neutrons and electrons will be miles apart from each other

Nothing. It becomes something when the universe gets there. If there is something there it can't be observed from our universe. If the universe bounces off it then we will know there is something there. Or maybe someday something will enter our universe and then we will see it. Otherwise if we don't run into anything we must conclude nothing is there.
Would the person who gave everybody a thumbs down please explain why. I am just curious. I mean if you have a different opinion why don't you just say what it is. Thumps down doesn't communicate much.

It's just getting bigger. Scientists believe that over time the distance between the galaxies are getting bigger. That objects outside our galaxy are getting farther and farther away. And that the mass of the universe isn't big enough to slow down this expansion appreciably. So it's just going to continue getting bigger.

to nothingness..... its not like you make two dots on a baloon and blow it... u will realise that the dots will move farther apart from each other so it is correct to ask where they are expanding into? NO.
their movement itself creates the expansion of the universe
