Now some people may find it stupid, for the people who do please keep your opinions to yourself. This may be "mind goggling"(i think thats the correct term) to others and so if you know you have had a positive answer to this all the time but no one ever asked the question, then please feel free to state what you think it is.
Thanks in advance.

'Hello' is a more formal greeting used when one meets someone for the first time OR when one is meeting someone in a more formal situation.

Some examples of more formal situations would be:
Meeting a potential employer.
Meeting an elected representative.
Meeting a pastor, priest, rabbi etc.
Meeting future parents in law.

'Hi' is more acceptable between friends and in casual situations. Derived from 'Hey'. 'Hey' is often substituted for 'Hi'. The definition of 'Hi' is often listed as 'A greeting' and also 'An exclamation to grab attention.' http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/hi

Also, the phrase you are looking for is 'Mind -Boggling'

Hope that helps!

'Hi' did not come from a Japanese word, Etymologists (scientists who study the origins of words) have the following information about it:

According to several dictionaries - see the above link - Hi orginated from the Middle English hy, hey (c.1475). It was also first recorded as an English word in 1862, first recorded reference is to speech of a Kansas Indian.

In truth, "Hi" is a shortened version of the Japanese "Ohayo," which is a rough translation of the English "Hello." Don't ask me how it was introduced into American speech patterns; I've heard 3 stories, and all sound somewhat moronic about the subject....

Hello is possibly more formal than Hi.

the word "hi" is a greeting among friends, in my opinion it's somewhat juvenile, but it's used a lot on the internet. The word "hello" is used by adults, and professionally.
