He promoted unity within his conquered territory, he promoted learning and the preservation of written works from times before. He was Crowned ruler of the "Holy Roman Empire" by the Pope, giving credence to the power of the Church, and setting the stage for the Church to become a huge part of Western Civilization.

Following the collapse of the Western Roman Empire after the taking of Rome by the Visigoths, numerous tribes swept through Europe and fragmented the state the Romans had created. Large numbers of small polity's existed. Charlemagne, (or Charles as he was), led one of the larger tribes - the Franks. He unified them and much of the European part of the Roman Empire, became Holy Roman Emperor (a title that existed until Napoleon forced it's abolition) and foisted christianity on a large number of people who weren't really that interested in it.
