They digest it. They aren't bees. Hummingbirds need lots of calories.

Hummingbirds do not collect nectar. They place their open bill into the feeder and lick up the nectar at a high rate of speed.

as soon as it is ingested it is digested and burned for energy. a humming bird can starve to death within two minutes if it is trapped without food.
