does it add value or anything special? just started collecting and was wondering what it meant.

It is the way the card glistens when you turn it a certain way. Yes it adds a lot of value to a card. It also give the card a lot of different colors.

Refractors are parellel inserts(special version of basic cards) from card sets like Topps Finest and Bowman. These cards, when you look from a certain angle will reflect light in the tone of rainbow colors on the card background. This insert is highly collectable and popular since its inception in, I believe, the 1994-95 season. If you have a Refractor insert card and the protective plastic is still on, please do not peel it off.
