My nephew just attended a job fair in Orlando and was somewhat dissapointed at the results. He is recently graduated from Michigan State University with a four year degree and was continually told that he was overqualified for the jobs being offered. He's a sharp young man. Everybody knows somebody. Can anyone put me on a trail to someone who is looking for a good candidate for an open position? Thanks.

I'm not going to be much help in this area since I don't live in Orlando. However, I just wanted to add a little info for you. A lot of younger individuals moved to Orlando when the market was high for buying in the area, now a lot of these younger individuals are moving away.

The problem is that a lot of the jobs in Orlando don't pay enough for most people to survive. It is a tourist area, which means a lot of low paying jobs.

If your nephew has a degree, he may find that he will do much better somewhere else in Florida where his degree will meet it's full potential.

Sorry I don't have an answer to your actual question, but I just wanted to pass a long a little info.

I wish your newphew the best of luck in his future.

I should also add that there are many career opportunities in Orlando, but it does depend a little on what his major was. Just like any place there are going to be lower paying jobs, but also some that offer good wages, it just requires some digging around to find it. He may also need to start in a lower position, and possibly one he is over qualified for, and then work up to a better position.

Your nephew is among many people in the same situation here in the Central Florida area. Over qualified for many of the positions here. You did not mention which field he has his degree in so that I can point you in the right direction. There are tons of jobs here in the hospitality field but there are also some of the larger corporate companies here that will hire the right person. Tell your nephew not to give up, he will have to do some leg work but he should find something that will compliment his degree.

I may have overlooked it, but didn't see what industry he is interested in? There are many jobs (and good paying at that) but you have to dig hard to find them down here because central FL is well known for underpaying then using the excuse "it's because of the cost of living." As someone who has lived in many other places it's really not much cheaper (maybe if you own a home it is...) Tell him to try applying for the companies he is interested in working in directly from their websites instead of going to job fairs or using monster, career builder, etc. I have never heard of anyone having much success with those sites down here, although sometimes Craigslist has opportunities.

Its strongly depends on what career field your son is looking for. Orlando is a big city with many career opportunities, but like I said it really depends on what field he is looking for. I highly recommend you browse some of Orlando's job website. Here is link to the Orlando Sentinel website, click on "Career Builder" for current job listings:
http://www.orlandosentinel.com
I also recommend that he picks up a hard copy of the Orlando Sentinel on Wednesdays and Sundays which is when the Career Builder job section is published, there are some jobs published in the paper that are not posted online.

I hope that helps. Good Luck!
