hi,,, city driving tailgate wind drag is next to none. so it is better up. before, fwy speed limits is 55mph. and a tail up or down will not matter because the body design makes minimal wind drag and gas was cheap so nobody cared. today, fwy speeds is faster and trucks now adays can easily go as fast as 100mph. speeds above 55mph with tailgate up, you will feel some drag and a slight vibration as drag increases therefore lower gas mileage. if you notice in the truck racing you will find that the bed is covered to reduce drag. why not just open the tailgate during the race? safety and body strength.. so now we replace the tailgate with a net to reduce drag. but thesame in city driving below 55mph tailgate up wont matter.

I get better with my tailgate off than in any other position. I have never tried a net but with it on whether up or down I get a little worse than with it totally off, but dont take if off if you carry things in your bed that can be dangerous and illegal in some states.

Adam & Jamie (mythbusters) found that the net was the best mileage, tail gate up was next,& no tailgate was the worst.
