Other ones...I have had both of the above mentioned...run the updates and scan religiously, and yet I am currently typing on an infected computer. And neither website can help me detect which virus I have. So I am taking my computer in to the Geek Squad tomorrow to let them figure it out and add the protection I really need. I am not a techie, but this is the third time I have had this problem in the past two years with Norton and Mcafee. They are lightweights when it comes to the number of virus' out there your computer is susceptible to. I would save yourself the headaches, hassle and money, take it into a pro-shop which would be anyplace that doesn't sell the products you mentioned...and have them load you up with some real protection. Norton and Mcafee are kid's stuff!!
Hope this helps.

I like Mcafee the best between the two. When I had Norton and after I had it for a year Norton kept bugging me to get an upgrade, to buy the Norton for 2007. Every single day I'd click on remind me in 15 days and yet the reminder came up everyday. If u get Norton just be prepared to be frustrated at the reminders after only one year. Mcafee is free for Comcast users, so u should get Mcafee. At least the upgrades are free for Mcafee also.=)

I think Norton works better but Mcafee seems to use less resource. Both work well and are quite easy to use and keep improving over time. They both cost around the same and have same features.
I stick with Norton because I know it better but I sometime use more then one program. Its a hard choice but both should work out fine for you.
P.S I would not go with anything else. I find that cheap and or free programs suck. I have used many other programs and these are the only two I recommend others buy.

Norton does not have many of the really annoying reminders and other lame things Mcafee has. Norton is usually ranked #1 by consumer reports and McAffee is generally not rated very high at all. They both protect you from viruses however.

Norton and McAfee have certainly the largest market share, but either of them is far from being the best. I will rate Kaspersky as the best, followed closely by BitDefender and NOD32.

McFee sold out to AOL the virus that installs all other's and a running joke about Norton is that it is the virus that keeps all other out. I would use Avast antivirus the free version coupled with spybot search and destroy, adware se, netdefence firewall or zonelabs firewall and You might want to look into a program called WindowsLiveOneCare at http://www.microsoft.com you can get a 90 day free trial of said program.

As a toss-up, I would say McAfee, because Norton tends to really push its product., Too agressive in its marketing campaign. It's almost like they like the fact of malicious software.

Avast Home Edition.
Can scan on boot before Windows loads. Scans e-mail and blocks worm-like behavior. Can notify when virus found using email, IM, P2P etc. Virus Recovery Database aids file repair.

Norton is pricey but great. we put it on our computer early this year and it's blocked about 6 medium to high threat viruses so far. very user friendly and gives you peace of mind, especially when surfing questionable sites where there is a lot of junk mixed in with the good stuff (like LimeWire). i give it a 2 thumbs up.
