Freewheeling front hubs are good for about 2 mpg to the good. They do require that every-once in a while that you use them, service them, and remember to unlock them in order to keep them functional. keeping them used and serviced you should see no problem with longevity and toughness

Front "freewheeling" hubs will save you a ton of money. Do you live in a place where 4 wheel is the only way to move? If not, the extra power needed to overcome friction and inertia should be used more wisely.Toughness and longevity is only a matter of the quality of the parts.
