Try it!
I had a talent for jumping, so went straight into track and field, no problem.
At try-outs they'll probably warm you up with a few laps, maybe do some 'drills' (ever seen Monty Python's Ministry of Silly Walks? ... or is it funny walks ... you'll feel like you've stepped into that sketch). They teach your muscles how to move, much like singing scales or doing barre work in ballet. Then they'll get you running - probably try you at different distances, perhaps in heats (small groups). Then some cool-down stuff and stretches. If jumps are an option, then they'll have you try a few of those - long, high. Probably not triple at a try-out, that needs practice and coordination. Probably not pole-vault, again, practice and coordination or you'll hurt yourself. If you're so inclined, they may have you try throwing a shot put (like a heavy baseball), discus (like a frisbee), or javelin (spear).
They'll not only be looking at how fast you run/how high or long you jump/how far you throw, but also your possibility for improvement. They'll want to see that you can focus, have fun, be a part of the team, do as instructed. Listen closely when they're giving instructions, that's half the battle at try-outs like this, if I recall!
Don't worry too much about being 'ready' for Track. You are. It's a mindset. If the coach is good, you'll get the training to make you ready! You have NOTHING to lose by trying, and everything to gain.
Best of luck!
(by the way, if you're good - even just decent - there are college/university scholarships available without a large competition)

We just ran around the track 5 times, did Indian Drills [ where the team is running in a line and the last person in the line runs to the front. ] and stretches and bleachers.
It was tough!
But I made it for cross country :)
Just make sure to drink GATORADE. It pumps you up. And also wear something comfortable and non-baggy, plus stretch the night before and ten minutes before.
Also, try laying flat on your back after stretching and just breathe. Eat Pasta too. It's a great energy booster.
