I agree i have always wondered that.
But apparently because in some countries there are no speed limits they make then as fast as they do.
I don't think that is a good enough excuse.
But anyway i do agree

I think because the majority of the people will buy a fast automobile. I mean, we love speed. Yet, we can't abuse it since we got the police/sheriff/highway patrol after us. Now, if we go on a highway, maybe then we can speed up. The odd part is that we can go at 50mph on the freeway; but some go from 60-80mph. So it depends whether there's highway police on sight.

Returning to the fact that people are most likely to buy fast cars, is due to street racing. Now those people like the speed of a automobile. Car companies know those particular people are willing to buy them.

I think this is the reason. At least here in CA (since it has a higher population than most States). I'm not familiar with how other States/countries run this issue. Although, I'm sure in other uncrowded States you can go at 80mph or more. nonetheless, I'm not sure. Good question. I hope you get a better answer. I look forward to reading your best answer. Peace!

Well I for one wouldn't buy a car if it couldn't go over the speed limit for the fact that there are times like in a big city where you go 110 or 130 if you don't you get ran over. Plus there are several Highway's and Inter-sates that are either like 90 in some areas or have no speed limit as a matter of fact I know of a street right next to me that doesn't have a speed limit.

The Key is to get one that goes faster than the police car. Ur question really makes no sense, speed limit in town 30, speed limit freeway 70, some states 80, so ur in town doing top speed of ur car, is that illegal. So, what difference does it make if it tops out at 80 or 110, you can still speed.

Well, you can do whatever you want on private property, rent time on a race track, race on your own strip of land. Why do ovens go up to... what?... 600 degrees? Its doesn't take any more effort to to get it to 600 than 350. An engine is an engine if it can go 80, it can go 90 etc.

back in the 1980's speedometers only went to 80mph, and you were liucky if the cars would do 80. Give me the option to go fast when I need to.

not really when the car makers make so much $$$$$$ from making them. even junk cars can go faster than the speed limit that dosent make sense either, they should just make all cars so they cant go over like 70 or something i think

Ya know, I have always wondered that too. If they don't want people speeding, then why don't they cut the speedometer off at say 75mph? If they don't want you going 130mph, then why is it even an option on the car?? lol good question!!

It's sort of unamerican to do so. It would be like the government getting rid of cigarettes because people die form them. Our country gives us warnings, and puts laws in place to encourage safety, but it is a testament to our freedom that we are able to choose whether or not to listen.

Plus, who wants to drive a sports car with a maximum speed of 75 mph?!!
