Fear and insecurity.

It certainly is dumb.

People will say we kill them because of punishment or deterrence. Well, no one can learn from punishment if it kills them. As for deterrence: The US is one of the very, very few first world nations with the death penalty and does have the highest rate of violent crime among such nations. If someone is desperate or twisted enough to feel that heinous murder is what they need to do are they really going to stop and thing "Well, gee, maybe not, I might face the chair?" To consider it punishment or deterrence is to apply logic where there is none. It's a clearly proven exercise in futility.

We kill killers because we are afraid of them. They are the monsters under our beds. A serial killer could target young blond boys and we could be an old, brunette, woman and we will still fear that monster in what it could do to us. It could consistently act on another continent and we will still fear its sudden appearance here. What's worse is that anyone we know, the most reasonable, kindest person we know could turn into that monster at any time.

When we kill that monster we are really trying to kill that fear.

But what if we could be that monster? What if we have ever felt angry enough at someone to wish a heart attack on them? We don't need to act on it, we don't need to cause it. It doesn't even ever need to happen. We still, even if for a fraction of a second, imagined how nice it would be for that person to be dead.

The people who kill in the most hideous ways are caricatures of that part of us. They are fun-house mirrors of ourselves. They remind us of what we, each and every one of us, are capable of were we to not consider the value of another's life or societal concepts of right and wrong. These are incredibly abstract concepts compared to simply eliminating something that doesn't please us. Distasteful to think about, yes, but, still, very much there.

We kill them in the hope of killing that dark part of us that we don't like.

So what is it? It's retribution. You hurt us and scared us this much so we are going to kill you. We would slowly torture you to death but we think ourselves more civilized than you.

we don't could tutor that killing is incorrect. all of us understand this is incorrect. We execute human beings to tutor others that there is a result and to rid our society of evil. Now that our gadget is so clogged and ineffective it expenses plenty to execute somebody. So i will hardly ever make the element that this is greater fee-effective to place them down than to abode them in penal complex for his or her existence. We additionally do it to avenge the dying of their sufferers. Who says that this is incorrect? for sure this is going to on no account convey the sufferer back, no one stated it might. this is not incorrect: there's a distinction between vengeance and revenge. additionally, you're able to rejoice with the version between killing somebody for egocentric needs (love, funds, etc.) and devoid of warning and doing away with somebody who KNEW it grew to become into incorrect and did no longer care besides. that form of guy or woman is risky (penal complex does not paintings the two, because of fact some prisoners have killed interior of their prisons). this is humorous that somebody reported abortion... because of fact of course present is a greater offensive crime than homicide to three human beings.
