If so, how often do they need to be taken? Also, what needs to be checked up on?
Thank you in advance for your answers.

I've had my guinea pig a year, and without onecheck-up. It's not uncommon to take them to the vet, and in fact it's good to do it once a year just like any animal; they can get infections and illnesses that can take months to show up. As long as you're taking all the necessary precautions, feeding plenty of fresh greens, administering the proper Vitamin C, and giving it plenty of exercise it may be months or even years before you have to visit the vet. Good Luck!!

Any pet that you care about needs to be taken to the vet.

I'm not a guinea pig expert, but you can probably find a vet that can care for your guinea pig by checking the phone book under Vets, and look at their ad to see if they work with "exotic pets." Or try calling a few local vets and if they personally don't work with guinea pigs, ask for a recommendation.

Please, please learn as much as you can about your pet. Here's some info from the ASPCA:

Veterinary Care
If you think one of your guinea pigs is sick, don’t delay—seek medical attention immediately. Common signs that something isn’t right include sneezing, coughing, diarrhea and lethargy. Guinea pigs are also susceptible to external parasites such as mites and lice. If you think your pet is infested, head to the vet for treatment.

i think that any pet should atleast go once a year........some people cant afford much more than that.........but every six months would be even better. Guinea pigs are relatively healthy resiliant animals.........the worst problems I have ever had with them was one had a cyst..........and one was bit by my dog on the nose........but occasionally they will get dry skin on their ears and butt.......their nales should be trimmed regularly..........and they are ok to be bathed as long as they arent small babies...........however do not use human soap........it will dry out their skin..........in the past 20 years I have taken my guinea pigs to the vet three twice........once to get a cyst removed and the other time was to have a gender checked out because I had came across a hermaphrodite guinea..........yeah it was a he she.........crazy I know. Anyway they dont absolutely need to go unless you start having like diarhea or wierd behavior I guess. Its your call.

You can do guinea pig checks yourself. If their behavour changes then you should take them to the vet. I don't take mine to the vet, but if I ever suspected any problems then I would be right there.

Only if you believe he has an upper-resp. infection. And most defiantly if he gets a case of wet tail.

Any animal that cost less than a dinner should not be taken to the vet.
