I'm 18 and i have a septate hymen, but recently it broke when i was taking a tampon out ( talk about painful =/) but it only broke at one end so now it just hangs there and it freaks me out!
I've heard about people snipping their own so i wasn't sure if i should try to snip it on my own or go to a doctor.

the problem is that i'm too embarrassed to ask my regular doctor and there's no way i want to go to a gynecologist yet( they scare me).

What should i do?

First of all, w/e you do DONT SNIP IT OFF YOURSELF. THere's millions of complications you can get from that. Everything from infection to permamnent vaginal wall damage. If you damage your cervix, you might even make yourself infertile. You basically have the same risks that someone has who tries to perform an abortion on themself, and those risks are really serious so dont try it yourself. I'm saying this for your own good. A friend of mine had a condom stuck inside of her cervix after intercourse and she tried to remove it w/ tweezers. She ended up contracting an infection and permamnenlty damaging her vaginal walls. Her skin is so weak there that she cant even use tampons anymore, and has to use a medicated lubricant for intercourse.

Well, the thing I would say typically here is to goto your doctor and talk about it, but apparently thats not an option for you. But, before I offer another solution, just please reconsider your confidence and going to your doctor- it would make things so much easier for yourself. You're 18, so you should be considering getting a gyno some time soon. The truth is that we all have to do things were not comfortable w/, but sometimes they're better in the longrun. If you feel uncomfortable telling them what problem you're there for, you can make up an excuse. Like, you can say that you want a pap smear test and then when you're getting ready for it ask the doctor about the hymen. Maybe try a female gyno if you feel uncomfortable? I really strongly suggest that you reconsider the whole doctor thing.

If you can't go to a doctor what you should do is...just leave it there. It won't be dangling forever, a lot of the time it will fall off on its own within a few weeks. A lot of times when you have your next period it will help to soften the tissue and make it fall off. If that doesn'thappen, then (I know this sounds gross) the limp, dead skin will eventually rot due to lack of blood circulation and once again, fall out on its own. I hope this helped and good luck!

This is normal for most people, dont stress over it. If you cut it yourself it will hurt the same or more than when you tore it...bad idea. Go to a doctor, they use local anesthetic for this procedure. If you are not comfortable to so your regular doctor for this, you need to change doctors reguardless of whether you get it done or not. You have to have a doctor that you are absolutely comfortable with for all consultations and procedures, not just one like this.
But honestly, if you can ignore it, do. Because its pretty normal, and not a problem medicallly .

You are 18 so you need to get a pap and pelvic exam now anyway. Why not just schedule all of this at once at your regular docs office and get it taken care of all at the same time. There is nothing to be embarassed about as the doc went to school to take care of things just like this. This is what he does for a living....................takes care of peoples problems. He has seen it all before and done it before. Make the appointment for the pap and pelvic and he do it all at once so you don't have to go back a second time.

dont snip it

try the doctor, i promise you they are very proffesional on this topic. if you really dont want to go, do some active sports or go to a gym. running increses blood flow and helps get rid of things that are not supposed to be there. the more you keep youre body moving and youre heart rate up the quicker it will go away. but a doctor will be quicker

"Just go to your gynecologist where he will either apply a cream to disolve it or simply cut it out himself/herself. It doesn't hurt at the doctor's."

Most gynecologists know that women dread going to see them, so most are pretty gentle and will tell you everything they are doing. If it helps, find a female one. In my opinion, male or female, they are the same because you are still in a vulnerable position.
