Baby Water Turtles

To start feeding baby water turtles by giving them several types of food together. Give them flakes, small pellets whichusually sink, and sticks or large pellets. Once they start eating and growing, you gradually stop feeding them flakes and small pellets. No big deal here on any of these foods. All are good and any one alone will do.

Water turtles must be in water to swallow. Spotted turtles should be treated as water turtles. Wood turtles may be treated as water turtles or land turtles.

Always feed water turtles in a separate container of water in water drawn from the water they are housed in. One inch of water is enough. There are many reasons to do this. First it keeps all the dirt (uneaten food) out of the aquarium. Secondly the water is the same temperature. We don't want to shock them with too cold or warm a temperature which can harm them or cause them not to eat. It also conditions them to a feeding event and to being handled regularly.

Baby water turtles will be slow picky eaters at first. Feed them every day. Give them 30 minutes to several hours (when we forget them). As they grow, they eat more quickly. Discard the water and leftover food when done but don't throw the babies out with the water.

Fish foods have about the same ingredients as turtle foods. There are differences to be sure. For our purposes we consider fish foods excellent substitutes. We would not recommend purchasing baby turtle flakes and small pellets if you already have fish foods available. Purchase large pellets in plastic bags sold for pond fish like Wardley's Ten. This is an economical why to feed turtles a good diet.

.

There are also canned turtle foods like canned box turtle
foods. The quantities of one can would be far too large for baby turtles

Forget veggies and fruits for baby turtles; they don't eat them. Never feed any turtles raw meats such a ground beef or raw poultry like chicken. Both have too much fat and harbor salmonella. Raw seafood is okay for water turtles. Cooked poultry and cooked eggs including the shells are acceptable for turtles after they begin growing.

What Do Small Turtles Eat

In captivity, a good diet for baby Red-ear Sliders, painted Turtles, and similar species would be a mix of good quality turtle pellets and live or frozen/thawed 'fish foods' like worms, shrimp, krill, crickets, snails, bugs, etc.

When these species get older, we would add more greens, but that is not an issue for a couple years.

Sea turtles, for instance, have several different subspecies. Many types of sea turtles feed on sponges, jellyfish, and other soft sealife. However, some turtles that have stronger jaws feed on shellfish. Not all sea turtles eat meat though. The green sea turtle is an herbivore, which eats no meat at all. They feed on algae, and are an important part of coral reef maintenance.

Realize that there are also water plants that aquatic turtles eat.
Anacharis
Water Lily
Duckweed
Water Hyacinth
Hornwort
Java Moss
Water Lettuce

We had a baby red slider turtle that we found, it ate the turtle food that you buy at store. I guess it has a strong smell to it. They also love the greens that grow in ponds. You can purchase from fish store. Try and grow it first then you will have steady supply.

you should feed them dry food (pellets) and either live crickets or mealworms. make sure the crickets aren't bigger than their head as there is a high risk of choking. feed them 2/3 times a day, about 3 worms or 2 crickets each and 2/3 pellets each. you can feed them wax worms as a treat (mine love them) but not too often as they are high in fat. contact your local petshop/your vet and they will tell you more.
