A general Rule of thumb...faster is better...
Now...think about this....the RAM is still faster than the Hard drive that you are using for the PageFile....so no matter what you do...you will notice a big difference in performance....
If you do plan on going to DDR400....then use 2x 512Mb and sell the DDR266 to someone....
Unfortunately Pablo suggests that you get a Dual Core processor...which would cost you even more money...apparently he doesn't understand that you are on a budget....

If you add more RAM and memory to the computer, of course the performance of the computer will greatly improve. But not only the memory should be modified, including the processors and graphics card if you want an ultimate experience with games. More memory increases performance of the computer, and cards improves quality of games and sounds. Although there is one set-back. Most computers have limits and the more speed you add on to them the system will crash. The computer is processing data too fast, that all of the RAM is concentrated to open one application. If only the computer can handle the speed you won't encounter problems such as these. Its better that you stick to normal speed. If you'd like to try this theory, your computer will be so fast that it will eventually crash. This speed is known as real-time unless your computer was designed to cope with this speed.

To start off, the single most important thing you can do to increase your computer’s speed is to add RAM--random access memory. It’s also the one thing in this course that will cost you money (but it’s worth it).
Think of your hard drive as a big box full of puzzles and games, and your RAM is like a table where you can assemble puzzles and play games. The bigger the table, the more puzzles and games you can play with at once. Conversely, when you have a small table (limited memory), your hard disk is forced to serve as an “artificial table” (or virtual memory). This fake memory trick works fine, but it causes the computer to slow way down. So it’s far better to have enough RAM so that your PC isn’t forced to use its hard drive for virtual memory.

Yes this will dramatically affect your computers speed. The difference however is more significantly seen in the fact that you would upgrade not by 512 mb but to precisely double 1GB. As far as gaming the more ram the better, also concentration on quality of video card (256 mb RAM is the baseline for gaming), and processor speed, and even your network adapter (ethernet card) play large roles in the quality of your gaming. I do advise you to check out both tigerdirect.com and newegg.com before you buy this RAM because they can probably get you the product cheaper.

It all depends, there are literly dozens and dozens of things that effect the speed of a computer. Its hard to say without knowing your computers specs and what type of games your trying to play. Generally speaking, more memory will allow you to run more applications at once and possibly load/run them a little faster. If its speed your looking for though, i would consider perhaps upgrading my processor, graphics card or investing in a higher speed memory. At the end of the day though, like i said, its hard to say not knowing your computers specs.

the memory is very important for your computer, its speed have a big affect on computer's performance really.now the memory 's price is so cheap that you can consider by a memory of 1g.the speed of computer will be faster.then you know the 512m may be can't make you satisfy.

The speed of the system memory is very important because it is a contributing factor to overall performance. If you want fast, get a dual processor.

Definitely! The more RAM or memory your computer has, the more applications and processes it can smoothly run.
