I have a windows xp and earthlink dial-up internet. Recently it has been disconnecting after 10-30 minutes of use. I have tried many things with little succes. I turned off my firewal (sygate), that fixed it for one day, then it stopped working. I turned off callwave (internet answering machine) same deal, same thing happened when I system restored to an earlier date. No matter what I do it seems like there is no solution. I scanned for viruses, found none, same with spyware. Any more ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Because your connection is not stable.

It may shock you, but it's just because you're relying on a dialup connection. Regardless of whether you're running on a local ISP (the downtown plaza's internet business) or you're connected by a company such as NetZero, Earthlink, or People PC, it's just an annoyance that can happen randomly to any dialup ISP. I've been connected for hours and will lose it at an instant; other times, it disconnects within a minute of my current session.

UPDATE:
Well, reading your additional details, it sounds like obviously your ISP (Earthlink) must be giving you rather poor connections. I acknowledge you said you've had it for 5 years but if you haven't done anything at all, it shouldn't be doing this obviously. Send an email to them asking what the problem is or what you're doing wrong perhaps. I have Callwave too and I can tell you right now, as I've went through three different dialup ISPs, Callwave has no effect on your connection performance, so that isn't it. Your firewall shouldn't be the cause either, especially since you have dialup, as they don't really mess with the ISP unless you've configured it somehow.

Hey, you also may want to check and see if your modem is working properly. I experienced similar problems and found out that my modem (the circuits were burning out) was malfunctioning. When you connect, check your connection speed. For example, if you have a 56k modem your connection speed should range from about 42-47 kbps. If it is lower you may want to buy another modem or at least update the driver software to see if that helps.

there is probably a setting in the options of the program allowing you to disconect if idle for a certain amount of time, or...there is something wrong with the internet connection line, number, provider.
