I had about a 2 hour arument w/ my my friend if metal is rock... it is though, i'm like possotive man. Metal is directly derived from rock, so that would mean the metal is a type of rock... just like alternative, country rock, classic rock, etc. Right?

No, it's not the same. Rock evolved from jazz, but does that mean that rock is jazz?! Of course not.
Metal is a separate, different genre.

Metal is a very distinct subgenre of rock. I can't see how it would be derived from any other genre of music, although some of the pacing and structure of some bands can be almost classically symphonic. However, metal depends on guitars and drums, which places it in the 'rock' metagroup.

Some people may argue that the roots of metal come from blues, but it was necessary for it to pass through the rock transition for sound and instrument development before 'going back' and looking at the blues structure again.

Even though metal is derived from hard rock and blues, I think that it has grown to the point where it can be considered its own genre. If you want to be really, really broad with categorizing music, then yes, metal is rock. However if you really look into it, how much do The Rolling Stones sound like Nile?

The list of heavy metals includes mercury, lead, aluminum, antimony, arsenic, bismuth, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, silver, zinc and tin.
Most Metals are mined from rocky sources called alluvial deposits or alluvial placers :) the metals must be mined or dug out of the ROCK :)

One of the heaviest metals is Lead....think of a band called
Led Zeppelin! One of the 'first' metal bands....they were 'Rockers'!

Also, the name has its roots in a song by Steppenwolf,
Born To Be Wild....
I like smoke and lightning
Heavy metal thunder
Racin' with the wind
And the feelin' that I'm under

In his 1962 novel, The Soft Machine, writer William S. Burroughs introduces the character "Uranian Willy, the Heavy Metal Kid". His next novel in 1964, Nova Express, develops this theme further, heavy metal being a metaphor for addictive drugs.

In the early part of the 1970s, bands with two lead guitarists began to emerge. Wishbone Ash, The Allman Brothers Band, Scorpions, Thin Lizzy and Judas Priest all made notable use of dual leads and harmonies. Many bands, such as Iron Maiden, would follow this pattern of having two guitarists share the role of both lead and rhythm guitar.

Heavy metal (sometimes referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music that developed between 1968 and 1974.[1] With roots in blues-rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, heavy, guitar-and-drums-centered sound, characterised by the use of highly-amplified distortion and fast guitar solos. Allmusic declares, "Of all rock & roll's myriad forms, heavy metal is the most extreme in terms of volume, machismo, and theatricality."[2]
