I want you to know up front I am against the death penalty, however, I want to know your arguments that say it is necessary. That is all. Thanks in advance. Please, no long answers, I just want simple arguments you have for the death penalty.

I too am against the death penalty. Every argument I have heard for the death penalty seems good but when you do the slightest bit of research it makes no sence at all. I have seen NO decent argument for the death penalty. That is why I think more and more states are starting to put moratoriums on the death penalty.

You have received a few incorrect responses. The facts do not support the death penalty, and, since there are alternatives, you will find it almost impossible to find any basis for supporting it beyond retribution (not quite the same as revenge.) Many people have not yet learned the facts and need to hear them.

Here are a few verifiable and sourced facts about the death penalty system.

Re: Possibility of executing an innocent person
Over 120 people on death rows have been released with evidence of their innocence, many having already served over 2 decades on death row. If we speed up the process we are bound to execute an innocent person. Once someone is executed the case is closed. If we execute an innocent person the real criminal is still out there and will have successfully avoided being charged.

Re: DNA
DNA is available in less than 10% of murder cases. It’s not a miracle cure for sentencing innocent people to death. It’s human nature to make mistakes.

Re: Deterrence
The death penalty isn’t a deterrent. Murder rates are actually higher in states with the death penalty than in states without it. Moreover, people who kill or commit other serious crimes do not think about the consequences or even that they will be caught (if they think at all.)

Re: cost
The death penalty costs far more than life in prison. The huge extra costs start to mount up even before the trial. There are more cost effective ways to prevent and control crime.

Re: Alternatives
48 states have life without parole on the books. It means what it says, is swift and sure and is rarely appealed. Being locked in a tiny cell, forever, is certainly no picnic. Life without parole incapacitates a killer (keeps him from re-offending) and costs considerably less than the death penalty.

Re: Who gets the death penalty
The death penalty isn’t reserved for the “worst of the worst,” but rather for defendants with the worst lawyers. When is the last time a wealthy person was sentenced to death, let alone executed??

Re: Victims families
The death penalty is very hard on victims’ families. They must relive their ordeal in the courts and the media. Life without parole is sure, swift and rarely appealed. Some victims families who support the death penalty in principal prefer life without parole because of how the death penalty affects families like theirs.

Opposing the death penalty doesn’t mean you condone brutal crimes or excuse people who commit them. According to a Gallup Poll, in 2006, 47% of all Americans prefer capital punishment while 48% prefer life without parole. Americans are learning the facts and making up their minds using common sense, not revenge or an eye for an eye sloganeering.

Some of the other answers I've read make me sick. I believe that in some cases the death penalty is necessary, but it shouldn't be as a form of entertainment. When a person is a continuing threat to society, they need to be kept from being a danger to others. I believe that to some, the death penalty is a much more merciful act than life imprisonment. I don't believe that people who are truly no longer a threat should be given the death penalty, although I do realize that this is a hard thing to determine, but giving the death penalty to any individual is not something to be taken lightly. Someone who thinks lightly about taking the life of a person has some serious issues.

It all depends on the situation and the circumstances, at first bob was against it bob figured let them suffer in prison and then (bob belieeves in god) god can deal with them so they get double punishment, but that was in 6th grade before bob became aware of criminals mentality and how law works. Bob discovered a prisoner on life without parole can apeal their sentences and get it reduced and get out at some point, most prisoners on life who commit server crimes are put away from the general public so they dont get *** ****** and beaten like everybody else and people with life will sometimes murder other prisoners and guards and sometimes these prisoners are only in there for petty crimes or have changed. Plus after reviewing many things, bob has found most prisoners are more scared of death then anything, prisoners tend to want to do ANYTHING to get the death penalty off the table. So with bobs newfound knowledge and embrace of the law, bob has decided if a crime is server enough, say a man rapes, tortures and murders someone bob would say kill em or if a vicious serial murderer who has the risk of getting out and murdering more people, guards or other inmates kill em.

**** this is a long answer sorry bob cant argue with a short answer.

I believe that there are times that a person does something that is so heinous that he/she gives up their right to live, as well as their right to be cared for by the society that they have harmed. I do not believe it is a deterrent to crime; I simply think that there comes a point at which a person is such a threat to society that he/she no longer has the right to live at the expense of others, both in terms of the monetary cost to the society, and the emotional cost to victims. At that point, I believe the death penalty is warranted and right.

Simple argument for the death penalty.....

1) The cost of execution is high but the cost for perpetual incarceration is much much larger.

2) At some point in the future the inmate might escape and kill again.

3) At some point the inmate might kill another inmate.

Violent crime against women and children should be set at death. Also, cold blooded serial crimes. These people historically have such a low rehabilitation rate, that they should be denied the opportunity to ever possibly return to society. Also, why should the tax payers, including their victims, have to support them for 30 or 40 years?

Would you want a convicted murder living next door to your daughter that just moved away from home for the first time.
You never know when and who they are after leaving prison.
I like the old Mexican prison - two cells two prisoners new one comes in old one goes out the back to the firing squad.
That's an old Texas joke

honestly im gonna get some crap for this but its my opinion . Anyway i really dont want to spend my money to keep a person alive that commited a horrid crime. I say kill um. They are a waste of life and to society and personally dont want to spend my feeding, colthing and providing shelter for someone who has no comppasion for others lives or even there own. Im sorry thats how i feel. I think the prison systems are bad as it is. Like i want to pay to send people to prison who half the time dont even do anythign there but fight and **** each other. Why should i spend my tax money on stuff like that ?????? Plus biblically i think its right.
