There are 50. The last state to enter the Union was Hawaii in 1959. Actually both Alaska and Hawaii entered that year. There were 48 states from 1912-1958.

50 states in 1975 and 1979. The last state added was in 1959, when both Alaska and Hawaii were added to the 48 states at the time.

Both in 1975 and 1979 there were 50 states in the Union. Hawaii became our fiftieth state in 1959.

This seems like an odd question (as the other answers made clear there's been 50 states for a while). Maybe you meant 1875 and 1879? If so, then the answer is 37 and 38 (Colorado became a state in 1876).
