I recently moved into an old apartment that has gaps in the shelves of the kitchen cabinets. I found a couple of bugs (eww!) and I think if I can seal the gaps it might help keep them out.

What's the best way to do this? Caulking?

Go to Lowes or Home Depot and get a can of expansive foam. just follow the directions on the can. Don't get it on you because it really hurts to remove it.

how large of a gap are we talking? if they are wider or deeper then a 1/2" you should get a backer rod ( a round PC. of foam its available in different thickness. stuff the gap with the backer rod and then caulk or wood fill the gap. stay away from the expansion foam there are a couple of different types and they may expand to much. or you could get contact paper and cut it a little wider then the shelf and cover the shelf and run it up the back of the cabinet and seal the gap that way.

Caulking or wood filler is your best bet. If the cracks are quite small, try exterior grade vinyl spackling it may work. Also be sure to cover what ever you use with primer and paint. After allowing the paint to cure for a day or two, install shelving paper as it will keep your dishes from sticking to the paint and it will be easier to clean.
