Yes, British people hear our accent the way we hear theirs. We can tell a New York accent from a Texas accent, and every culture has their own way of speaking.

Even if it sounds to an American as if one is speaking accent free, a Brit would easily pick up on the American accent.

In my opinion, I think British people speak the real kind of english that we Americans sorta adopted and changed up all over the place. But really, everyone has an accent in some way or another. Its not like the way Americans speak is the center of the universe.

Americans aren't accent free! Duh! We have an American accent! We have many accents.

There is the Boston accent, the east coast accent, the southern accent, the midwestern accent, the western accent, and all shades in between.

I'm a midwestern accented American, and I can notice the other accents of our country when I hear them. Most of us can.

One evening, we were dining out. In the booth behind ours, the waitress asked "Do you want salad or tomato juice?" and then I heard a thick British accented male asking his wife. "WOT did she say?" You see, the waitress's accent was so foreign to that Brit's ear, he couldn't understand what she was saying.

No, they have no idea. People from Britain have a different design to their ears. When they hear English spoken there is a small flap in their ear called an britonizer and all accents are removed and they only hear British accents.
