I am in the 5th day of my atkins diet and I have only lost 4.4 pounds. Does this sound about right? I thought you were supposed to lose weight rapidly on this diet. Has anyone else tried it and if so, how much weight did you lose and how long did it take?

Ok, well again, I realize everyone is trying to give you good information, but unfortunately many people are misled into believing everything they see on television or by "doctors" that aren't registered dietitians. RDs have gone through rigorous training to earn the title of RD. Honestly, they are the only people that you can truely believe when it comes to nutrition questions. Even "nutritionists" aren't reliable. Anyone can give themself a title of nutritionist. (just a little fyi so next time you can solid information)
As for the Atkin's diet...personally I am not a big fan of it. Especially for athletes. (since you asked this question in the swimming section I assume you are a swimmer) The idea of low-carb diet does not work for athletes. Carbohydrates fuel your body for the energy you need to perform any activity. For the sendentary person, Atkin's could work-but be careful, your brain runs on carbohydrates (broken down) and if there are none for it to use, it will start using ketone bodies causing your body to have excess nitrogen making it more difficult on your kidneys. Bottom line, going on a "no-carb" or "extreme low-carb" diet is not healthy for you and NO athlete should be on it. (esp since most people eat all the fats they want, making their blood pressure and cholesterol levels skyrocket) Eating a healthy amount of complex carbohydrate (whole grains), but focusing more on protein will help you loose weight, make sure to drink extra water (not soda or coffee) though! Hope this helps and good luck!
PS-loosing more than 1-2 pounds a week is not healthy for you either...you will end up putting that weight back on

You are right on track. It's reasonable to expect to lose about a half a pound a day. That will add up faster than it sounds. Decide how much you want to lose, double that number to find out how many days it will take you to get there. I assure you that if you do that and then stick with the diet you will get there right on schedule.

All of the people saying it doesn't work are saying that because they didn't like being on the diet. They absolutely have no idea what they are talking about. It will work for EVERYONE, as long as you are a human being. You will not gain the weight you lose back unless you start eating poorly after you stop the diet, but no more weight than you would have gained eating that way with or without the diet.

With Atkins, you will lose between 10 and 20 pounds during the first 2 weeks, so you are on track.

After you return to your normal eating habits, you will gain 3 times the weight you lost.

4.4 pounds in 5 days is actually rather dangerous if you're not morbidly obese. The recommended weight loss is 2 pounds a week for the healthiest results but for the diet it sounds a little above average but still around average. PS: Do you know that Dr. Atkins himself died of a heart attack from his own high-meat consuming diet?

Atkin's is good for the short term, but it's not good for long term weight loss or for your health.

I've not tried it but I heard it doesn't work for everyone.
