IMHO, cultural conflicts were just props for the show. The show starts with your typical cultural sterotype - the always whining black youth, the fast talking chinese lady, the (matt damon) white policeman about giving too much to the black.

But the show revolves about redemption and how human being will search within themselves by defeating differences with goodness in them.

It is the society that put stress on various forms of life that made us choose different paths - the ambitious DA, Don Cheadle character, the shop owner who tried to kill the lock maker and the policeman who kill the black youth by mistake and commit another by dumping him.

The show is best summarised by the last scene when 2 car crashed and the black HMR worker started spilling racist remarks. Cultural difference are triggered by the stress of society (represent by the crash).

Deep inside no one gets along with everyone despite race. there is always going to be some deep seated dislike and judgment.
