1. The focus is the exact place along the fault where the rock first failed causing the earthquake. The epicenter is the point on the earth's surface directly above the focus.

2. P-waves are the fastest moving of the seismic waves. They behave much like sound waves -- they are compressional waves, and move through the earth at about the speed of sound.
