One reason was to stop the expansionist Soviet Union. It was believed that the USSR would take over nation after nation after nation. Stalin was in power in 1950 and his record of ruthless expansion suggested that he would push until he was met with resistance. This is the same reason for the Marshall Plan and Truman supporting Greece. Our involvement in Vietnam also started during Stalin's regime, but really took off after the French got out in '54. This is not to say that our purpose was altruistic. It was in our interest to stop the march of Soviet expansion and not let them gobble up more and more lands and peoples. Each area in which we contested the Russians had it's own strategic and geo-political value. Also, much of the world served as a place for us to sell our goods or to extract raw materials.
