I have an iMac with 10.4 (most updated) and want to type in Hindi. (Actually a dialect of it, Gujarati). In my font book, it has it, but I can't type it. I looked in Systm Pre.>International and it had it. But how do I type it?

You were on the right path:

1. Choose [Apple] menu then [System Preferences], and click [International]
2. Click [Input Menu], and click the checkbox next to the keyboard layout or input method you want to use.

3. Open the application that you want to use.
4. Click the "Input " menu icon in the menu bar and choose the keyboard layout or input method you want to use. Then start typing.

I have a Mac too and I know how to solve you're problem. Okay, here are the steps:

1) type in the word
2) if not underlined in a red squigle then type a word that will have one
3) Go to Tools on the toolbar then click Spelling and Grammar
4) Click options after the spelling and grammar box is displayed
5) go to Dictionary in the Spelling category
6) Select the Language down arrow
7) Select the language needed and click OK

BAM! Problem solved....

Hello Bluemini93,

So you have a font that will work in the proper language. So now you launch TextEdit (or what ever your favorite word processor is) that will access your Mac's fonts. Let's try it inside of TextEdit though.

While you are inside of TextEdit, go up to the Format > Font > Show Fonts menu command. A dialog box will come up with your choice of fonts. You need to be able to find that Hindi font of yours now. You may need to select All Fonts in the Collection list to find it.

Select it and the font size, and you should be able to type those hindi words inside of TextEdit. I'm not sure what letters will work with what keys, but maybe you can figure that one out by trial and error.

Best of luck to you.
