Yes... You want to have the Hard Drive first in the Chain though. The reason for this is that it will operate quickest. And IDE Channel Assumes that the first drive in the Chain (Or the Master) is the quickest. If you pust a slow drive (Which a CD / DVD Drive will be), it will actually SLOW the Hard Drive performance down.
You will also want to set the Drive Jumpers on each at "CS" or Cable Select.
As long as you have a pretty up to date PC, the Motherboard should be able to pick up the drive correctly. BIOS (On Boot up) may prompt you to hit F1 or one of the F Keys to confirm the changes, otherwise you should be ok.
If you are running SATA based Drives, that is a whole new ball game and make sure to follow the manufacturers instructions properly.
You also really want a decent Power Supply when running this many drive, I would recommend at least a 400W or above. If you PS is not strong enough, it will not harm the PC, but you will notice it just shutting down on it's own. (Happened to Me, I used to run 6 Drives when I build my first TIVO out of a PC)

Most likely yes. If you open up your computer and find the power supply, you should see some unused wire bundles coming out of it. By unused I mean they're not plugged into anything. That would be your power for your hard drive. Next you need a ribbon cable and a slot on your motherboard to plug it in to. The other end of course plugs into your hard drive. The ribbon cable coming off your other hard drives should have a plug on it somewhere, where you can slave another drive to it. Yeah, it should work.

keep your dvd drive with the first IDE drive place the other two drives on IDE 2... make one the master and the other the slave
now why you ask do you keep the dvd drive with IDE 1..
simple you dvd is not in use all the time so there for your C:/ drive will maintain the access (faster) speed most of the time

Yes, you can attach the 3rd hard drive on the ide cable with your DVD Drive, but make sure you check those jumpers on the back on each drive; which one you want to assign as primary or secondary.

Yes. Make sure the BIOS is set to automatically detect the new drive was installed. I would make the new harddrive the Master Drive on the second channel and the DVD drive the slave drive. That's if your drive is going to be the most used, otherwise make it the slave drive,

You sure can, I like to set all the drives jumpers to cable select so the BIOS has no issues discovering your new hardware.... and you may want to upgrade your power supply first....
I recently had a gaming rig fry with 4 SATA and 1 IDE drive hooked up because I didnt have enough power to run everything....When power supplies die, they are known for frying the motherboard and everything attached to it.....

Hi. I don't think so. The DVD can be a MA (master) or SL (slave) but the hard drives use a different communication format, I think.
