I assume that the standard path is an undergraduate liberal arts degree and then a masters degree in library science? I had the impression that one wouldn't get an undergraduate library science degree.
If so, what should one get their undergrad degree in? Is there usually a preference?

Actually, your undergrad degree can be in just about anything. Hopefully it's something you are interested in. Actually, a law librarian sometimes has a law degree in addition to a library science degree. There are some majors that might be appropriate for certain other kinds of special librarianship, if that's where you're headed. Examples: medical librarian might major in the biological sciences or even pre-med. If you're inclined toward the arts want to work in a museum or gallery, your choice of major would be obvious. If you want to be a school librarian, a degree that prepares you for a teaching certificate would make some sense.
Librarians come from all fields and interests. Just follow yours.

I work at a library, although I'm not a librarian... However, I do know that you major in whatever interests you, which will usually become your specialization at that library you work for.... For example, you like history. You get a degree in that and you become the ref. librarian for kids researching the civil war and you would be expected to make suggestions for buying new boosk dealing with history and such... either way you'll be reading alot!

My sister has a BA in English and a masters in Library Science.

I would imagine that you could go a lot of paths. Just do what you think would be fun. You can always change your major later after you have had time to get a feel for what you like.
