My girls were born 6 weeks early, they are 3 years old now. They have always been small for their age but have never had any health problems just the normal colds once in a while. Developing mentally they are above some their age. So they are doing just fine!

I have an 8 month old who was born at 36 weeks. She spent almost 2 weeks in NICU then was sent home on a heart monitor for almost 4 months. She has developed fine, she was born at 8 pounds though so she wasnt tiny but she is off the charts now for weight and height. SHe is already wearing 2T clothes, she is so tall. The only real problem we have had, aside from breathing stuff, is eating. She had to learn how to eat at the hospital and we started trying to feed her food at 4 months (as recommended by our ped) and she wouldnt eat and wouldnt eat, only wanted the bottle. FInally at 7 months she figured it out and is now eating three toddler meals a day along with any snack, fruit, cereal we put on the high chair for her. Regarding physical tasks, she is right on schedule. Sitting up, rolling over, etc on schedule. Not early but not late either.

A neighbor who had a premie at 34-36 weeks (unsure of real due date) smoked during pregnancy and physically, the little girl has tons of breathing problems, allergies, etc and catches every bug and virus that goes around. SHe is small for her age but not an unhealthy size (she was born just under 5 pounds) She is now 2 and already potty trained and able to do things at the "right age" although she did have a rough time in the begining keeping up.

Hope this helps

My son was born at 29 weeks and 3 days. I had steroid shots to help mature his lungs at 28 weeks as the doc knew he would be preemie cos I went into labour 3 times from 26 weeks. He was breathing on his own from birth. He spent 2 days in neonatal intensive care unit and 6 weeks in special care nursery. The only set back we had was a bit of jaundice. He just celebrated his 2nd birthday. He weighed 1.72 kg at birth was able to go home when he reached 2.5 kg. He has never really been that delayed. He had cut 7 teeth by the time he was 7 months old. He walked around his first birthday. He doesn't say a lot of words at the moment but he understands when I ask him to do stuff. He now weighs 13 Kg and is 87 cm tall.
He was one of the lucky ones and I feel blessed for every day that I have with him. I meet many other preemie mums that weren't so lucky.

My son was born at 26 weeks and weighed 2 pounds (19 years ago). He was given 48 hours to live (luckily he didnt listen !!). He was on a ventilator until 2 months old, had heart surgery to repair a valve at 3 weeks (only weighed 1 and half pounds at that time) and had to have a colostomy at 4 weeks to repair a perferated bowel ( was reversed at 5 months). He also had 2 hernia ops.
He was allowed home after 4 and half months in hosp weighing 5 pounds. He developed slowley but caught up quick !! By the age of 7 he was nearly average height but slightly underweight.

He is now 19, engaged and studying at college to be a children's counsiller. He has his frst training day today to be a samaritan. He has no health problems at all and is average height (5 foot 9") and still underweight (he is very slim, but not worryingly)

My neice was born three months early. She weighed 1 lb 9 oz. She's 16 now. Her only problem is that she is considered to be legally blind. Her retna is detached in her left eye. She can see out of her right eye, but she has to look closely at things. She can still do regular things like ride a bike, and walk without a cane or dog. This was 16 years ago. Medicine has come a long way since then. She seemed to catch up with everyone by the time she started school even with her vision problem.

my neice was born at 4pounds at 32 weeks, she is now just under 2 and looks about 3 she is so big, she has developed normally.

On the other hand my little girl was born full term at 5 pounds 12 , developed great, top of her class now, and potty trained at 21 months, but she is tiny for her age. She is 6 and a half and is only 103 cms tall with a size 9 feet.

my one daughter was born at 26 weeks, she was in hospital intill 2weeks after her due date, shes on the small side but apart from that just like my other 5 infact shes really clever, shes involved in a study and will be intill shes 18 its to do with the medicine etc had whilst trying to stop labour they send me a question form out every year which i dont mind if helps research prem babies etc.im also a trainee midwife and have seen lots of prem babies as small as 1 lb some do have extra medical problems and need help breathing for longer or some that has physical and mental damage but with the equipment and things hospitals have got nowadays its amazing what they do and the survival rate and recovery rate of a prem baby has risen so alt of children develope normally maybe a little slower than some but this is normal for children anyway no one kid is the same.xx

I was born at 36 weeks. I weighed just over 5 pounds, went home the next day and have no health problems. I also have a first class degree.

My nephew was born at 32 weeks. He weighed 4.5 pounds and spent 4 weeks in hospital. Now he is 2 and no health problems, although not as big as some boys his age.

My neighbors son was born 5 weeks early. He had to be incubated for jaundice and because his lungs weren't completely developed. He stayed in the hospital for about a week and a half. He's 18 months old now and is completely caught up to my daughter (who is 19 months old and was 10 days late). He's actually surpassing her in the height category but is a little slower than her with words and weight (but he's normal because my daughter's pediatrician told me she's very advanced for her age with her speech). My cousin was born at 6 months. She stayed in the hospital for a year and ended up blind and slightly retarded (but this was 22 years ago and they didnt have the technological advances they do now). They said she wouldnt make it past her first year but shes 22 now. She lives and works in a home for the mentally slow. She makes a paycheck. And she does work on the side creating Braille menus for local restaurants. Shes done well for herself despite the fact that she was very premature and has disabilities.

I had twin babies born at 32 weeks and spending 3 weeks in special care, they came home weighing 4lb 12oz and 4lb 5oz, I would say by the time they started school and were 5 they had fully caught up to their peers, size wise they caught up sooner at around 12 months. They are now 10 yrs old and in the top groups of the class.
