My stereo broke when I was moving. I can play CDs in my computer CD drive but the sound isn't very good. Can I get good sound with better speakers or is the sound unlikely to compare to a stand-alone stereo system?

If upgrading speakers would work for my purposes, which ones would you recommend?

Please note that although I love music I am not an audiophile, so if I do buy a stand-alone stereo it's not going to be a fancy one.

your cd player in your computer is prolly way better than you can buy in just a stand alone stereo... you will just need to upgrade your speakers... if there is a best buy near you go inside and take a look at the selection... a good set of speakers would cost you between $40-100.... if your really into the sound... you could spend up to a couple hundred.. but that is not necessary.

What you need is a 24 bit DVD player for your computer. Today such a player records and plays CD's, DVD's and you get all this for as little as 35 to about 55 dollars. I might be wrong but I do not think you can get a player that just plays CD's that is 24 bit. Most of those older type of CD players are 16 bit or worse 8 bit player/recorders. Make sure you check the box the DVD recorder/player comes in first to insure it is 24 bit as not all computer DVD players are. I do not think it is your speakers as I hear the difference in the sound the minute I put the CD in my 24 bit DVD player. Your computer plays back from your hard drive at 8 or 16 bit and that depends on your computers sound card.

Honestly, it doesn't matter. Although, the stereo is probably better quality since it is a analog signal (for records). But speakers from your computer are fine. In fact, I would RECOMMEND THE CD PLAYER ON YOUR COMPUTER because you can play a variety of music. My advice is to get new, kick butt, computer speakers. Logitech or Bose will do the trick!
