We want to get a second vehicle for taking short fishing/camping trips.
*Want to spend about $5000
*SUV-type vehicle
*Can pull a 17-18' foot Bass Tracker boat

How old of a vehicle do you think we are looking at, and how many miles do you think we should expect to be on it? We're pretty open to all makes of SUV-type vehicles but are not interested in a pickup. I'd appreciate any input or ideas - thanks!

I would seriously forget the SUV and look hard at a GM or Chev minivan... the Astro or the GMC equivalent, not the front drive junk. It gives you 5000 lb towing, a great 4.3L v6 and lots of room for the stuff you need for fishing (ie: many coolers of beer and jugs of gasoline for the Tracker). For $5K you can get one about 5-6 years old with less then 100K miles on it and if it's been looked after (very visible based on just looking good) it should last for 200K miles easily. The 4.3 GM motor is a worker for sure. The tranny is strong as well and I would recommend a tranny cooler (for $150.00 installed) if it doesn't have the trailering package from the factory. All of them are wired for towing and the wires are in the spare tire compartment. Parts are VERY plentiful and it's pretty cheap to maintain.
Good Luck!

take a look at a chevy s10 blazer, they can be found for pretty reasonable price and should be able to handle what you want to do.
