I dislocated my finger, and our student health center is closed. Is it terribly bad to let it sit overnight, or should I go to the emergency room? I really don't want to, it seems like a waste of time, but if it's necessary, I guess I will...

Gently pull on the finger until it goes back into place. If you have some tape, then tape it to the next finger for security. Don't wrap it too tightly. A trip to the ER shouldn't be necessary, unless it swells and the pain lasts more than 24 hrs. Put ice on it to reduce the swelling you might have now and take 2 ibuprofen for the pain.

If you have already pulled it back into place then a trip to the ER is not needed. They will not be able to do anything except xray it to see if it is broken. Even if it is the only thing they will do is tape it to the finger next to it. The best thing to do is gently wrap it to the finger next to it. Take a couple of Ibuprofen, avoid aspirin. If it continues then go to a Dr tomorrow and he will prescribe something for pain. Again there is no need to waste your time in the ER tonight

I have put many joints back in place over the years. Have someone do this...pull straight out on the end of the finger with one hand while gently and simultaneously pushing the joint back into place with their other hand. If it goes back in place then just ice and elevate, if not then splint the finger and head to the ER if you can't stand the pain. Good Luck!

If the pain is unbearable and you have insurance, the ER would be a good place to start.
If you think you can sleep through the night, perhaps the student health center is a cheaper route. They may, however, just forward you to the ER.

if there is an urgent care place in your area you can go there, either you need to get it checked out, if you have put it back into place and it is still swelling then you may have a nerve being pinched or it could be cutting off circulation somewhere. Only an x ray can show what is going on with it and if it is in the right position or not, dont wait cause you could suffer perminant damage to your finger if you wait to long.

Hi go to your local hospital as soon as you can they will fix it straight away there is no use putting up with the pain also the longer you leave it the more swollen it will become that will make it harder to put back in place it will not fix itself if it is still dislocated good luck

Well, the fact of hte matter is the longer you let it sit, the more it will swell, the harder it will be to get it back in, the more it will hurt after it does get back in.
You are taking some risk letting it swell - damage to nerves etc.
I know it sucks, but you should go the ER.
Sorry

If it is dislocated, then yeah, you need to get it reduced.
It'll eliminate a lot of unnecessary pain and swelling. If you let it set up overnight, then it'll be too swollen to do anything with.
Go now!

You need to go,I dont know the extent of your injury as to was it smashed slamed etc,but you will need to get an exray....keep a cold compress ,ice,on it to help keep the swelling down and go.You dont know for sure if its fractured/broken either way they will just set and splint it...

yeah you are gonna want to get that done asap. if you are hardcore you can try and do it your self, but thats not a good idea! they will basicly just pull on it pretty hard to get it to realign, they will also probably check for fractures... the longer you wait the more pain you will endure!
