When given a standing ovation, does the recipient sit or stand?

If standing they need to continue with a polite nod then slowly sit down to calm the crowd. If sitting they should rise slowly give acknowledgment of thanks with a nod and slowly sit down to calm the crowd. So I believe a brief stand should do.

he or she sits. if it is an extended standing ovation, it's proper for the honoree to stand, wave, acknowledge the crowd and then make a "be seated" hand wave motion.

you stand to acknowledge it, it would be a hard thing to sit through
